I just noticed that it takes longer for our dishwasher to run its course than for my clothes to dry (including my jeans).
How clean do we really need those dishes to be?

Dishwashers are way less efficient than washing machines (time-wise) because they don't get the advantage of having the dishes immersed like the washing machine does. The washing machine gets to slosh water through your clothes pretty much constantly, but the Dishwasher relies on spraying little bits of caustic/abrasive stuff around in the air with some steam to get the dishes clean.
